SUMMARY:The Eight Greatest Films Ever? One Day University
DESCRIPTION:THE EIGHT GREATEST FILMS EVER? -FOUR FOREIGN AND FOUR AMERICAN MASTERPIECES \nOf the thousands of foreign films that have been made\, which four should every movie buff see? Professor Joseph Luzzi has chosen La Dolce Vita (director Fellini\, Italy)\, Fanny and Alexander (director Bergman\, Sweden)\, Jules and Jim (director Truffaut\, France)\, and Ran (director Kurosawa\, Japan). What makes these works so enjoyable and meaningful? And what qualities mark them as masterpieces? This portion of the presentation will explore with audiences the remarkable world of foreign cinema. The class will analyze and discuss key moments from these pieces of cinema history\, as we view clips from each masterpiece. Students will learn what makes these films a foundation for any film lover’s education. \nCitizen Kane\, The Godfather\, Psycho\, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Could these be the four greatest American movies ever made? Orson Welles\, Francis Ford Coppola\, Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick were all operating at the pinnacles of their respective talents when they created what many movie scholars and critics consider the greatest masterworks in the history of American Cinema. These revolutionary films not only defined the turbulent social and cultural eras in which they were made but successfully transcended those eras by casting a giant shadow of influence across the entire film industry that is still reflected on movie screens to this very day. Each film is noteworthy for its directorial style\, shrewd presentation of narrative structure\, trail-blazing technical innovations\, mesmerizing editing sequences\, painstaking attention to period detail\, and deft handling of controversial political themes. \nAcclaimed Bard College Professor Joseph Luzzi teaches both film and literature. He was previously a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania\, where he received the Scaglione Prize for his teaching\, and at Yale where he was awarded a Yale College Teaching Prize. \nMarc Lapadula is a Senior Lecturer in the Film Studies Program at Yale University. He has taught at Columbia University’s Graduate Film School\, created the screenwriting programs at both The University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins where he won Outstanding Teaching awards and has lectured on film\, playwriting\, and conducted highly-acclaimed screenwriting seminars all across the country. \nPURCHASE TICKETS $119 HERE \nSchedule 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM \nFour Foreign Masterpieces\nJoseph Luzzi / Bard College \nJoseph Luzzi is a Literature and Italian Professor at Bard College\, and was previously a Visiting Professor at the University of Pennsylvania\, where he received the Scaglione Prize for his teaching. THE BOOK OF GUTSY WOMEN: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience is the first book that Secretary Clinton and Chelsea have written together\, and they are excited to welcome readers into a conversation they began having when Chelsea was a little girl. Join them as they discuss the women throughout history who have had the courage to stand up to the status quo\, ask hard questions\, and get the job done. \nInspired by women whose tenacity blazed the trail\, the two global leaders lay out a vision for how these stories of persistence can galvanize women and men\, boys and girls around the world. There’s Greta Thunberg\, a 16-year-old climate activist whose Asperger’s syndrome has shaped her advocacy. Civil rights activist Dorothy Height\, LGBTQ trailblazer Edie Windsor\, and swimmer Diana Nyad\, who each kept pushing forward\, no matter what. Writers like Rachel Carson and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie\, historian Mary Beard\, who used wit to open doors that were once closed\, and activists like Harriet Tubman and Malala Yousafzai\, who looked fear in the face and persevered. And so many more. \nThis groundbreaking celebration of gutsiness is a call to action – not just for women\, but for all of us\, especially now. The authors write\, “Ensuring the rights\, opportunities\, and full participation of women and girls remains a big piece of unfinished business of the twenty-first century. Finishing it is going to take all of us standing shoulder to shoulder\, across the generations\, across genders. This is not a moment for anyone to leave the fight\, or sit on the sidelines waiting for the perfect moment to join.” \nAll tickets to the GUTSY WOMEN Tour include a copy of THE BOOK OF GUTSY WOMEN (Simon & Schuster; Hardcover; October 1\, 2019; $35). \nThis is not a book signing. Scattered Books (local bookstore) will be at the event if attendees wish to purchase additional copies of the book.\nHillary Rodham Clinton is the first woman in US history to become the presidential nominee of a major political party. She served as the 67th Secretary of State after nearly four decades in public service advocating on behalf of children and families as an attorney\, First Lady\, and US Senator. She is a wife\, mother\, and grandmother. \nChelsea Clinton is a champion for girls and women through her advocacy\, writing\, and work at the Clinton Foundation. She is also an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. She lives in New York City with her husband\, their children\, and their dog. \nTo learn more about THE BOOK OF GUTSY WOMEN. \nAll proceeds benefit the Friends of the Chappaqua Library\, a 501(c)(3) organization. Approximately $2-$4 is tax deductible. Our goal is to get students as comfortable as possible with an audition for any upcoming college program or school/local production. Students are broken down into small groups throughout the day to get a more intense one-on-one experience with our guest artists. By the end of the workshop\, students will have had opportunities to work with our guest professionals on the 4 categories or an audition: \nACTING: How do I perform this monologue to its fullest potential? How do I not get choked up on nerves with the text of the piece? How do I show the director that I can take changes and be comfortable? All of this and more is included in in this intensive part of the day. We ask students to please come prepared with 2 monologues each (one comedic and one dramatic). \nDANCE/MOVEMENT: How do I tackle a dance/movement call when I don’t have dance training or experience?
